Companions

Introducing Companions

Our Companion pen pal project allows people to send personalised letters to elderly people in a bid to combat loneliness. According to research there around 1.4 million older people in the UK who often feel lonely, a situation that was exacerbated by Covid-19 restrictions and limits on social mixing.

A lost art

The idea for the Companions project came from one of our volunteers. He wanted to brighten the days of elderly people by connecting them with local people using the lost art of letter-writing. We aim to bring back that feeling of excitement when a letter is posted through the door, writing and receiving letters also makes for a great pastime and can lead to wonderful new friendships.

What to write

Getting started as a letter writer is easy. You can talk about yourself, your family, your pets, your job, your hobby, or even your hopes for the future. We all lead busy lives and there will always be something new to tell your pen pal about. If you need any help to start writing letters just ask, we will share some tips to get you underway.
