Smoke alarms will be fitted free of charge by the South Wales Fire Service, (vibrating smoke alarms for the hard of hearing) who carry out a home fire safety risk assessment.
Bogus callers should be reported immediately to South Wales Police.
Contact your gas, electricity and water suppliers and ask them about their password schemes to reduce the risk from bogus callers.

Shopping
Contact local shops for details of local home delivery services. Many stores provide online shopping. Some of the larger stores may provide help in-store for disabled people.
Some towns operate Shopmobility Schemes, which hire out wheelchairs or electric scooters.
Sight Loss
Sight tests are free for everyone over 60. Further information available under ‘Opticians and Glasses’.
To register as blind or partially sighted, visit your GP and ask to be referred to a consultant. The consultant will carry out an assessment to decide whether the person is blind or partially sighted and then forward a report onto the relevant Social Services departments, who will arrange a visit.

Big Print is the only national weekly newspaper available in large print and can be purchased on subscription in the UK from RNIB. Low vision aids are available from opticians taking part in the Welsh Assembly Low Vision Scheme. For aids such as adapted phones contact: Social Services departments, RNIB or Partially Sighted Society. Wide range of large print books and talking books available through libraries, RNIB and ‘Listening Books’

Swimming
RCT, Bridgend & Merthyr county boroughs all operate a free swimming policy for the over 60s. The applicants can pick up a form direct from any pool. The applicant will then be sent a pass which entitles them to swim free at any pool within the borough.
