Funeral Payments
Funeral Payments may be available to people responsible for organising a funeral and in receipt of Income Support, Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit, Tax Credits or
income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance. Savings are ignored. The DWP must consider that it is reasonable for the claimant to be taking responsibility for the funeral.
The payment can cover necessary burial and cremation costs, certain necessary travel costs and up to £700 for other funeral expenses. It may be claimed up to 3 months after the date of the funeral. If you get a Funeral Payment it will have to be paid back from any estate left by the person who died, or money from any insurance policy or pre-paid funeral plan.
Contact Social Fund (DWP) for more details. Also see Factsheet 27 “Planning for a Funeral”.
Furniture
Second-hand furniture in good condition collected and sold at low cost by Too Good to Waste (RCT) and Salvation Army. Unwanted furniture in poor condition will be collected by the local council for free as long as it is a kerbside collection.
