Aids & Adaptations
Social Services departments provide some aids and arrange some adaptations, e.g. stair-rails, grab-rails, stair-lifts, walk-in showers, ramps, commodes, toilet raisers, chair raisers and electric bath seats. There is no automatic right to aids and adaptations – they are subject to a needs assessment. There is no charge for aids except for major works such as stair lifts and level access showers, which are carried out via Disabled Facilities Grants and are therefore means-tested. There is a return/recycle policy for some items, dependent upon condition.
Care & Repair may also be able to advise on adaptations. The local Disabled Living Centre and Disabled Living Foundation also advise on aids, adaptations and mobility equipment.
Smaller items may be purchased at local pharmacies or ‘mobility’ shops, or may be ordered through their catalogues or via the Internet. Specialist items for people who have a visual impairment may be bought via RNIB; people with a hearing impairment may buy aids from RNID.
